How to get 12 testers for your Google Play closed test

Updated October 18, 2026

Finding 12 people with Android phones who will keep your app installed for two weeks is the hardest part of closed testing for most solo developers. These are the approaches that work, from free to paid.

1. Trade tests with other developers

Thousands of developers are stuck on the same rule. Testing each other’s apps is the fastest free way to fill 12 seats, as long as everyone really uses the apps. Look for communities where testing is tracked, so testers can’t install and vanish.

Dozenship is built for this: you earn Sparks by testing other developers’ apps and spend them to list yours, and Android confirms the time each tester spent in your app.

2. Ask the people around you

Friends, family and coworkers with Android phones can help, but they tend to forget after a few days. Send them a short message with exactly what to tap, and a reminder in week two.

3. Use a Google Group

Add a Google Group to your closed testing track instead of typing emails one by one. Anyone who joins the group can opt in, so you can share one link in communities, on social media or in your newsletter.

4. Be careful with paid tester services

Some services sell “12 testers for 14 days”. Google looks at engagement, so testers who never open your app don’t help you, and an application built on fake activity can be rejected. If you pay, make sure the testers are real people who use the app and send feedback. No service can promise that Google will approve your app.

How to keep testers for all 14 days

  • Recruit 15 or more, so a few drop-offs don’t reset your count.
  • Give testers one simple task, for example “play one match and tell us what confused you”.
  • Ask for feedback in one place: an email address or the feedback link on your test.
  • Ship a small update in each week of the test and tell testers what changed.
